Chapter 17

Peering over the brush in front of them, Freya could not see the figure of the Queen anywhere in sight. Why would she be all the way out here? What was she doing speaking with those Fae? Bronwyn held her bow in place, ready to fire at anything that came near them. Whether she realized whose voices were speaking, she never let on, her Fae abilities making her still as a stone, unmoving and unwavering. Freya’s blood went cold as she could only make out a few sentences of the conversation.

You told me she would be taken care of. Where is she? The Queen said to the Fae woman.

I know who took her, Majesty. I know exactly who took her and I intend…we intend to make good use of the information, the Fae woman, Ellia, Freya remembered her name being, replied.

She could ruin everything. She could take him from me. Find her, I want no excuses! the Queen barked.

And then they were gone, the black ink disappearing into the clearing. Freya heard someone running, she assumed it must have been Ellia returning to her companion. Bronwyn lowered her bow and grabbed Freya’s arm.

“We’re leaving. Now.”

“What was that—” Freya tried to ask but Bronwyn shot her a glare that made her stop short.

And then she was on Bronwyn’s back and they were running with the speed and swiftness that only the Fae could possess, never once crashing into any brush or tripping on any stones. The way she moved was like the wind, incredibly graceful. They reached the camp in time to find Rafe and Salea standing by their tent, their arms crossed in front of them. They loosened their exterior stances when they saw Bronwyn’s face and rushed inside.

“What happened? You were supposed to be back an hour ago. What if Marcas had come looking for you two, what were we supposed to say?” Salea snapped.

Bronwyn set Freya down and shot her a look that made her clamp up. Rafe noticed it as well and then saw the pale look on Freya’s face.

“Tell me what you saw.”

Bronwyn shook her head in confusion and disgust.

“It is not what we saw, but what we heard,” she started, and then looked at Salea. “We have bigger problems than Marcas disapproving of Freya’s training.”

They all stood around the tent, unmoving and watchful as Bronwyn sat on the edge of her cot.

“We have to amp up her training. Immediately. Sal, you need to start using real weapons. Rafe, you need to push to the limits,” she stated, looking at the General and his soldier, who seemed puzzled.

“Since when do you give us orders?” Salea asked.

“Since I witnessed the Queen and Ellia speaking to each other in the forest. About her,” she snapped and pointed to Freya, who was sitting on the edge of her own cot.

Rafe and Salea shot a look of surprise over to her and then back to Bronwyn, needing further explanation.

“Are you sure?” Rafe asked in what Freya could only describe as his commanding voice that he more than likely used on his men.
